Ice Sailing

ICEBOATS - is a boat or purpose-built framework similar in appearance to a sail boat but fitted with skis or runners (skates) and designed to run over ice instead of water. Iceboats commonly used for racing are usually only for one person. However, several classes of two seat iceboats are common. Iceboats are not produced commercially on a wide scale, but remain largely the province of hobbyists and enthusiasts building.

The International DN is a class of iceboat. The DN is 12 feet (3.7 m) long, with a 21 inch (53 cm) wide cockpit and an 8 foot (2.4 m) wide runner plank. The 16 foot (4.9 m) mast supports 60 square feet (6.5 m²) of sail area. The boat weighs 100 lb (45 kg), and is piloted by a single helmeted sailor. The front runner is typically rigged with a steering rod that connects the runner to a tiller that is mounted just aft of the mast base. Maximal speed is 140 km/hour.

The Monotype-XV is a structure of the interwar period designed by Erik's

von of Holsta from Haapsal - Estonia. In 1931 Erik von Holst designed for commissioning to the European Union Ice Sailing, the modern two-seater run with the steering runner in the stern and with the rig ket about the surface of the 15m² sail. The Monotype-XV iceboat is the only 2-seated iceboat in Europe. In favourable conditions this run is developing the speed 60-90 km/hour and after appropriate arrangements even over 100 km/hour. The Monotype-XV appointed by Stanislaw Turkietti is exalting the record of Poland of the run 109,7 km/hour.

Presently the ice sailing as the extreme sport is spending the second youth. Local travel agencies offer a variety of courses for those interested in iceboating.

ICEBOARD - is an equivalent of a windsurfing board but used on ice. It is an excellent way to spend the free time. Iceboard can be an admission for the learning of swimming on the traditional board. Iceboard is very stable and it is easy to keep it balance on it, however the helmet is being recommended.
